“When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt
Sounds like great advice, right? But what does it really mean? I think Roosevelt was trying to tell us a couple things.
Meaning, “end of your rope”; a state in which one is not able to deal with a problem, difficult situation, etc., any longer.
Roosevelt is suggesting that you find one thing that you can specifically hold onto. Whether it’s an accomplishment or a task you have complete control of. Something that you can grab with both hands and feel like you’ve made progress.
16 That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our inner strength in the Lord is growing every day. 17 These troubles and sufferings of ours are, after all, quite small and won’t last very long. Yet this short time of distress will result in God’s richest blessing upon us forever and ever! 2 Corinthians 4:16-17
When we observe perseverance in the Bible, we see a powerful message that tells us not to lose heart. When persecution or trouble hit, we are to remember that God’s love will win in the end.
It’s sometimes hard to take the advice in these scriptures on perseverance — particularly the idea of fixing “our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,” yet it is by looking to God and our reward in the afterlife that we live our best and most authentic lives.
