Alive and Growing

,

I am not just a tree, I am a keeper of time, roots that penetrate the earth, and branches that embrace the sky. In my silence, I hold the story of thousands of years.” -Unknown

In many ways all living things go through life the same way. As a sprout, we face the same danger of not being able to protect ourselves. A bird comes along to snatch us up to build a nest or get trampled by any number of animals. As we grow stronger and more formidable, we thrive and grow taller . We think everything is going to be just fine. We have a family of squirrels to protect and some birds living on our branches. The rains are scary but necessary. We hear about relatives in other places get burned in forest fires. We hope we never have to face these evils, but we know they exist. Over the years we start to lean and get withered a little. We still tell ourselves and our families that we are still as strong and vibrant, but we produce less leaves to cover our balding spots. We may sway a little in the wind , bend but don’t break. We live a pretty long life as long as no one cuts us down in our prime or we get root rot and die a slow painful death. All in all at the end of our life we have done good for many different things. In our death , we decompose into the earth . Our nutrients fill the soil so that the next generation of trees can prosper. It’s a wonderful tree life!
