“The Tree”
For 30+ years, we have decorated the tree on Thanksgiving night as a family. While “Miracle on 34th Street” plays on the TV, the tree comes to life! It takes longer than is probably necessary because I linger over each ornament and dwell in the history of each one for a bit. This year, I had to step away at least five times I was crying so hard.
Neither daughter was home to help decorate this year. Life had other plans. They had wonderful days where they were and they are happy! I on the other hand, am old and sappy. My husband tried to help but then he started crying. The dog thought we were both dying, so would not move more than six inches from my feet.
The flute ornament was the first to make me cry. Followed by the horse ornament. The third time was over a “Mrs. Clause” ornament commemorating a 4th grade Christmas play. The 5th time was set in motion by a smiling ECU Marching Pirate ornament.
Finally, I just gave up. I turned off the traditional movie choice and watched Tyler Perry’s “ A Madea Christmas “ for a complete shift of focus. Instead of hot chocolate and cookies, the two old folks had wine by a bonfire.
I admit to being a bit emotional. What I have come to be so thankful for in life are those moments that were so beautiful, no matter how many tears fall, I will always chuckle and smile at the memory.
Tree decorated. New traditions ahead! Thankful that I love people enough to miss them!
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”
